 MAY 6TH COUNCIL MEETING

 PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

            In the past month, the PWD serviced lawn mowing equipment, did spring clean up at the park, began pool repairs, did pothole patrol and did street sweeping.

      The PWD also met with the PAWC about water main replacements, met with residents for the George St. project and attended the pre-construction meeting.

      The George Street project is scheduled to begin May 19th.

 POLICE DEPARTMENT

            During April, the police responded to 404 incidents of which 31 were criminal incidents.  Twenty (20) persons were arrested or cited and one (1) juvenile was handled in the department.

            SPRING FESTIVAL AT THE PARK

            The Lookout Fire Company is holding its annual Spring Festival at the Park on Thursday, May 22nd, Friday, May 23rd, Saturday, May 24th, and Sunday, May 25th.  Come and enjoy the rides, games and food.

  ZONING OFFICE

            During April, the Zoning Officer issued 13 building permits, 18 contractor licenses, 5 re-sale property inspections, 12 rental property inspections, 5 electrical permits, 3 plumbing permits, 3 plumbing permits, 2 certificates of occupancy, 1 yard sale permit, 1 well meter` and 1 sidewalk permit. 

            There will be a hearing on Thurs., May 15th, at 7 P.M. to hear an application by Nicholas Sabatine for a special exception use to convert a building at 21 N. Lobb Ave. into a multiple dwelling with six units.

 LOOKOUT FIRE COMPANY

            During the month of April, Lookout Fire Company responded to 24 calls.   They spent 379 hours on the calls and logged an additional 336 hours on training. 

            At their annual banquet, Carl Meixsell, Jr. was presented with the James G. Dietrich Firefighter of the Year Award.

            Lookout Fire Company received a $5000 grant from GKEDC.

 MUNICIPAL AUTHORITY

            The WWTP upgrade is ongoing.  The trickling filter has been demolished, temporary access road installed, power line relocated and foundation for new Operations Building completed. 

            Pipe Services Corp. has completed televising 65% of the lines. So far, 49 laterals were found to be leaking.

 WEONA PARK PALS

            The Weona Park Pals have recently purchased new bleachers for the basketball court and plan to fund a project constructing a stone wall planter at the former jeep ride location.  Look for the Pals with their homemade pies for the park’s Summer Sounds concerts.

 PERMITS

            Residents are reminded to contact Zoning /Code office for required permits.  Some of the most frequently needed spring/summer permits are:

            SUMMER SOUNDS CONCERTS

On five (5) Sunday evenings, free concerts will be held at the band shell.  Hot dogs, soda, coffee and homemade pies will be for sale.  Concerts begin at 6 P.M.

 June 29th  Nazareth Municipal Band

July 13th   Majestics – country band

July 27th   Serenades – swing band (tentative)

Aug. 10th   Inch and the Echoes – hits of the 50’s – 70’s

Aug. 24th   Nazareth Municipal Band

 These programs are funded by Pen Argyl Borough, Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association, GKEDC, MPTF and PA Partners in the Arts.  (The regional arts funding partnership of PA Council on the Arts, a state agency.  State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by PA’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  PPA is administered in this region by the Lehigh Valley Arts Council.)

 MOVIES IN THE PARK

Movies will be held on three (3) Friday nights with Saturday rain dates.  The movies are held on the ball field.  Bring your blankets or chairs.  Refreshments are available but you may bring your own.  Smoking and the use of alcoholic beverages are not permitted.  Movies will begin as soon as it is “dark enough.”  Funds for this program have been provided by  the Pen Argyl Borough, the Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association and the GKEDC.

 The dates for this summer are July 18th, August 8th and August 22nd.

 SWIMMING LESSONS

The Red Cross Learn to Swim Program will be held Monday through Friday, July 7th – 18th.  Children must have completed kindergarten.  Levels I, II, III, IV and V will be offered.  Cost is $20 for the program.  Scholarships are available.

 RECREATION

 Recreation will be offered the weeks of July 14th and July 21st for children who have completed kindergarten through grade 6.  Cost is $25 per week for the first child, $20 for the second child and $15 for the third child.  Recreation is sponsored by the  Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association and GKEDC.  Scholarships are available.                                                            

CAROUSEL & MINIATURE GOLF

Beginning Friday, May 30th, our historic carousel and miniature golf course will be open Friday evenings 6 – 9 P.M.; Saturdays and Sundays 12 Noon – 9 P.M., weather permitting.  Carousel Rides are $1 and Golf costs $3.

 WEONA PARK

Weona Park is operated by the Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association, a nonprofit 501 C(3) organization.  The Association meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 P.M. at the Community Center.

 Tax deductible contributions to support any program of the park may be made to Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association and sent to P.O. Box 128, Pen Argyl, PA   18072.

 The Community Center and the Pavilions near the play area are available to rent for activities.  Contact the park office for more information.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

            Garbage/Recycling – Recycling will be on May 9th and 23rd.

Also, garbage will be picked up on Sat., May 31st, due to Memorial Day.  Garbage/recycling containers are to be placed on the resident’s property at the curb line and are not to be placed before 2 P.M. on the day before pickup.  Residents are asked to recycle as much as possible in order to increase the money we receive each year from the DEP.

            Parking meters – When putting coins in the parking meters, do it slowly.  Also, no pennies are allowed.

            Swimming pool passes – Discount passes will be sold on Saturday, May 24th from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M.  For Borough residents, single pass will be $70 (discounted pass $65); family passes will be $150 for a limit of 4 family members, additional family members will be $25/person (discounted pass $140 plus additional $25/person); resident senior pass will be $30.

            Passes for nonresidents will be $125 for single (discounted pass $120) and $225 for family of 4 members and $25 for each additional family member (discounted pass $215 plus additional $25/person).

The Dawghouse  - a new business in town at 492 ½  E. Main St. is selling hot dogs, soups, fries, and beverages.  Hours are Mon.-Thrus. 11AM – 8 PM, Fri. and Sat. 11 AM – 9 PM and Sun. Noon – 7 PM.

            Pool Party – Interested in a pool party?  The pool is available for private parties (up to 30 people) on Friday evenings.  Call the park for more details.

            Lawn Care – Grass and weeds should not exceed 6 inches in height.   Mowers and trimmers should be angled so that clippings do not enter the gutter or roadway.
